Robert the Bruce

This beautiful pendant has been cast from a coin minted during the reign of Robert the Bruce circa 1320s.

Robert the Bruce the famous king of Scotland, legendary for his role in the Scottish Wars of Independence. The story goes that after a disastrous first year as king. Robert was driven into exile.  Hidden in a cave, he watched a little spider try and fail to spin its web.  Eventually, after trying, and trying, and trying again, the spider managed to weave one single line of silk, and from there was able to build its web.  Inspired by the spiders perseverance, Bruce returned to fight the English and led the Scots to victory at the Battle of Bannockburn.

One side of the coin features a left-facing bust of Robert himself holding a sceptre with a surrounding inscription "ROBERTVS DEI GRA" (Robert by the grace of God). The reverse displays a long cross patonce with a pierced mullet of five points in each quarter, and the inscription "SCOTORVM REX" (King of Scots).

The chain is 18" sterling silver trace chain and item comes gift boxed with our Catcher and Caught branding.
